Maine Part I: Fog

John, Rachel and I just returned from a week in Maine. Man, what a place. It seems lame to boast about how great your vacation was on your blog, so I'll try to not do that, but I actually felt ready to return to work afterward. I don't think I've ever had such a thoroughly relaxing vacation.

After making our way through hot and sunny Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and southwest Maine, we turned a corner in Portland and boom! Fog. They have some serious fog. Above is the Portland Head Light, commissioned by George Washington. Didn't seem to be doing its job last Sunday.

We made our way out to our first night's destination: Bailey Island, a tiny town at the end of one of those Maine coast peninsulas, which, thanks to the fog when we arrived, felt a little bit like it was at the very end of the earth. Here is Rachel chillin (reading "Backpacker" magazine because she's that hardcore) at the Driftwood Inn's rustic lodge-y cabin where we spent our first night.
Highly recommend the Driftwood Inn. We listened to the very waves you see here (and perhaps one or two others) all night long.

As much as we try to resist being hyperconsumers, we are, after all, Americans. It just didn't seem right to skip the colossus L.L. Bean flagship store in Freeport the following morning. Besides, John was able to find two mini-totes so bright and cheery they banished the fog.
That John. He's a sucker for a cheery mini-tote. Check back for more dispatches from vacationland.

How fun! I would love to go to the LL Bean flagship store. And Maine, when it's not so darned chilly or foggy. (Chilly=under 85 degrees.)
